Today という名の子育てに関する詩

ニュージーランドの子育て支援施設の
壁に貼ってあったという詠み人知らずの
Today という題名の子育てに関する詩です。

とにかく、後半の怒涛の巻き返しが凄い！！！

Today

Today I left some dishes dirty,

   今日、皿を洗わずに、ほったらかした、

The bed got made about two-thirty,

   ベッドを整えたのは2時半ごろ、

The nappies soaked a little longer,

   オムツを少し長めに浸けといたら、

The odour got a little stronger,

   臭いが少し、キツくなっちゃった。

The crumbs I spilt the day before

   前日にこぼしたパン粉が

Were staring at me from the floor,

   床から私をじっと見つめている、

The art streaks on those windows panes

   あちらこちらの窓ガラスに残る縞模様のアートは

Will still be there next time it rains.

   次の雨が降るまで、ほったらかす事になるだろう。

"For shame, oh lazy one," you say,

   あなたは「みっともない、怠け者、

And "just what did you do today?"

   今日一日、何してたの？」って言うかも。

I nursed a baby till she slept,

   赤ん坊が寝るまで、彼女を抱っこしてた、

I held a toddler while he wept

   坊やが泣きべそかいてる間ずっと手を握ってた。

I played a game of hide'n'seek.

   かくれんぼをやった。

I squeezed a toy so it would squeak.

   掴んだらチューチュー鳴るオモチャを鳴らした。

I pushed a swing, sang a song,

   ブランコをおして、歌を歌った、

I taught a child what's right and wrong.

   子供に何をして良いか、何をしちゃダメかを教えた。

What did I do this whole day though?

   今日一日何をしたんだろう?

Not much that shows, I guess it's true.

   目立つ事はそんなにしてない、それは本当かも。

Unless you think that what I've done

Might be important to someone

With bright blue eyes, soft blonde hair.

   もし、私のした事が

   キラキラした青い目とふわふわのブロンド髪の

   誰かにとって、重要な事だと思わないならね。

If that is true, I've done my share.

   子供にとって重要な事だったとすると、
   私は自分の責務をはたしたんだ。
